heraddiction @ 10:08pm: I've been crying all day.
We got Guey's X-rays and her chest was filled with fluid. The vet said she most likely has heart failure or cancer that is causing the fluid. They drained the fluid and gave her pills that are supposed to make her pee and get rid of fluid as it comes back.. and that's pretty much all they can do for her. She was happy and purring this morning but I'm afraid the trip to the vet seems to have WORSENED her condition, even after draining the fluid. She's still breathing heavy, and now she's like... emotionless. She was hiding under my bed tonight and came out for some attention and as she laid down on the blanket she had some sort of seizure. Then she took a nap.  I think the medicine finally hit her since her breathing went back to "normal". I've only gotten her to purr once since she has been home from the vet. She has been eating and drinking and using the litter box.

It's really hard because she is acting normal except for the breathing, she looks normal.. but I'm afraid she won't make it through the night.
Emergency vets cost like $300 to get her put to sleep.. and on Christmas they'll probably charge more. Lollypop Farms (the humane society) isn't open.

I feel so worthless.. I can't fix her and I can't ease her pain by putting her to sleep.

I got her on Christmas Eve 13 years ago. Now she is being taken away on the same day. So sad. I've literally never been this sad before in my life. She was my baby.

I've read that making memorials online for your pet is therapeutic, so here is a picture taken today of my kitty aka the best kitty in the world. She looks worried.. ;_; I'll always love you Gue! Now I'm off to cry some more.

missusgeek, posting in bakebakebake @ 6:28pm: judo fondant cake

This was an order for a judo-themed fondant cake from a lovely young lady to her boyfriend. She provided the design, along with a drawing of the 'pose' of the two figurines.

Dumb bimbo moment: I literally had to kneel down and replicate the pose to figure out how the legs were bent :P

More photos on my blog, and after the jump!

Okay, so my dad is full-blooded Swedish and I want to make him some traditional cookies. He can't remember the name of his childhood favorite, but he told me they were:
1. very buttery cookies
2. looked like three fingers
3. covered in powdered sugar
4. were not Fattigmann

I guess his grandmother made them all the time, but he hasn't had them since he was a child. I've googled and looked in the bakebakebake memories, but can't find anything! Please help me out! I'd love to make them for Christmas if I get a recipe today :)

The hot/dead/slightly wonky pixels really show up with these ISO settings - but wow! these are previously impossible situations to photograph in...

Big piccy's without noise reduction (mostly)...

Personally, this is good, and with noise reduction improving it'll be even better. What I'm really after is a camera with enough dynamic range to photograph the sun from inside a cave, and be able to pull off the details in the cave, and the sun-spots on the sun... from the same exposure.

I wonder if the ammo caddies would be able to eventually contain multiple rounds filling the space to the centre of the cartridge? At the moment there's only the perimeter used, which is an awful lot of space wasted. I'm thinking of normal spring loaded gun magazines in a circle...
sarahs_muse @ 9:43am: 10,000 gigaton reserves of frozen methane - heading for the sky
If global temperatures continue to rise, massive amounts of methane gas could be released from the 10,000 gigaton reserves of frozen methane that are currently locked in the world’s deep oceans and permafrost. Passing this climate tipping point would result in global warming that would be far worse and more rapid than scientists’ current estimates.

sarahs_muse @ 8:52am: Emergency Recall on Brittany Murphy Posters
Wiki:
Brittany Murphy (November 10, 1977 – December 20, 2009)[1] was an American actress and singer. She starred in films such as Clueless, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, Uptown Girls, Sin City, Happy Feet, and Riding in Cars with Boys.

At 8:00 a.m. (16:00 UTC) on December 20, 2009, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to "a medical request"[22] at the Los Angeles home Murphy and Monjack shared. She had apparently collapsed in a bathroom. Cause of death is not yet known.

From TMZ:
"A DVD rental company is moving fast to remove outdoor promotional posters of Brittany Murphy -- posed lifeless in a bathtub -- for her movie, "Deadline."

Officials from redbox -- which operates DVD kiosks around the country -- tell TMZ beginning today field teams are removing the "Deadline" box art from the kiosk displays. The officials tell us it will take 7 - 10 days to remove the image from the 19,000 kiosks nationwide.

We're also told the "Deadline" distribution company will change out the DVD covers."

_buenavista, posting in bakebakebake @ 12:47am: Unbelievably Easy Roast Beef

I present to you all a Christmas roast. It's the perfect holiday meal. This roast beef is rich and flavorful, while still very buttery and tender without actually using any butter! Believe it, friends, for I speak the truth. This roast beef is perfection. I had never made a roast beef before, so I was extremely happy with this meal. The outside was crusty, lightly spicy, and expertly seasoned. You don't need a lot of fancy ingredients for this roast beef; you probably already have all of the ingredients in your pantry. I served this with mashed potatoes and Kramer and I were in heaven. The best part about this roast beef are the sandwiches you can make with it the next day. There's nothing better! If you're making Christmas dinner on Friday and still unsure as to what to make, this is the recipe, I promise! Recipe after the cut or on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath.

Happy Holidays!

Sorry, no pics of the finished product. But I can assure you that they're all very yummy!

carabeara, posting in bakebakebake @ 6:01pm: What to do with oatmeal raisin cookies???
So, I baked some oatmeal raisin cookies the other day, and stored them in a ziplock bag (never doing that again!). Someone tried to clean up the dining room and moved the bag around too much and now they are mostly crumbs :(
Anyone have any neat ideas of what to do with the oatmeal raisin cookie crumbs? I, of course, will probably still munch on the bits and pieces, but I think it'd be nice to turn the crumbs into something new.

Thanks!!

So, today rolled around and I was bound and determined to make him that cake - the one that I decided to learn to make fondant for - and while my 6 year old went off with his dad for work, I spent all morning making this cake. Again, box cake :( but everything else is me.

it's time for me to say good bye to telefonplan and my studio space. it's not a big deal, but it is a big deal, you know, like things sometimes are. it's been a place where i've gotten some work done but most importantly i made some really good friends and learned about sharing a space. the height of it all was our art show in april! so many people came out, everyone from childhood friends to new friends to my parents to my aa managers. i was so proud of us. true to my tradition though, life changes dramatically every year. i've moved, i've moved back, i dumped my ex, i've gotten new jobs, quit old jobs ... maybe i'm deluding myself but i feel that i need to do this until i find peace in one spot. not as in "oh, a year has passed, i better do something drastic" - it's just happened this way. at least it keeps things interesting. i've been in stockholm a solid two years now, and with the same man. i've no intention of changing that, and i sincerely hope (and believe) that the new friends i've made will last this time. i'll be working from home for a while (above is home, this is where i will get to spend more time, and happy to). i have some writing to do, and i was never able to do that with other people in the room anyway. i've got vague plans for 2010 too, but nobody knows about them and it might stay that way, because they may never come to be. anyway, to everyone i've shared my studio with, thank you, and i really care for you guys. to m & e - ♥♥♥ u 4evr, k?

ps. m, if i ever catch a leprechaun, you can have him.
heraddiction @ 3:25pm: Cats
My cat guey is sick. She's 12-ish and has cat asthma her entire life. While I was away at college she lost a lot of weight. My mother wouldn't take her to the vet for regular check ups because her new philosophy on vets is "they charge you a lot of money for you to officially find out they're dying and there's nothing you can do but be sad because you can't afford the $4000 surgery that may not even help".

Tomorrow I am taking her to the vet anyway. I feel like she might just need a new diet, or get her lungs drained. She's having issues breathing. Like if you pick her up she starts to breath really heavily with her mouth open for a long time. Strangely enough though she is still feisty and tries to jump around on top of things.

I've tried checking her teeth but she REFUSES. Pink = healthy, blue = lack of oxygen. I think they may be purplish. Mostly everything I have read online seems to make be believe as long as it isn't cancer it is treatable.

Hopefully I don't come home tomorrow in tears.

I have opened a few windows and turned the vicks vapor humidifier on for her. She seems to enjoy both, so hopefully it is helping.

Arts & Crafts, and the pre-Raphaelites were the breeding ground of Art Nouveau.
The serene and ethereal look of the women painted by the pre-Raphaelites Dante Gabriel Rossetti or Edward Coley Burne-Jones
echoed in the expressions of  Art Nouveau women in the next decades.
A Dutch painter who was very much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was Antoon van Wely.
His qualities were international recognized, exept (typical Dutch) in his own country.
Here are some examples of his work.

So, is it worth watching Avatar at the pictures?
We've got a cinema near by, no IMAX though, and it's about £6 a ticket. =(

I wonder if it would be possible to sneak food and drinks in, disguised as Christmas presents? -grins- I've heard some places are really cracking down on bringing your own food in, and I rather not pay another £30 on top of the tickets for snacks.
sarahs_muse @ 5:37pm: Mandelson: Do your degree in two years
Universities face a move towards two-year degree courses as the Government dramatically reduces higher education spending.

The announcement of the cuts, which will see £518m lopped off university funding next year, provoked an outcry from vice-chancellors, students, lecturers and opposition MPs last night.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/mandelson-do-your-degree-in-two-years-1848107.html

They're two years anyway!

The first year is getting everyone from varied backgrounds level so the core teaching can start in the second year. I figured this out myself, and when I asked a dean he said I was right.

Also, the first year is used to acclimatise to the expected way of Uni life... where you can learn how to manage your own time - for many people this is the first time they've been away from home and being independent.

Where I was, the first years marks didn't go to the final degree... the lessens got everyone up to speed, and were used to train everyone in the Uni way of life, and finally as a filter to remove those that weren't suitable

Cramming - because that's what it will be - 3 years into 2 will mean something's got to give. Good skills will be even harder to attain.

Two years is just ridiculous.
